Eye Gaze & Alternative Access
How does eye gaze technology work?
Eye gaze technology enables a person use their eyes to control a computer. This can be used to replace the need for a keyboard or mouse. It also can be used in conjunction with other access methods such as the use of a switch in the case of an individual who is unable to lock their gaze on a fixed point for an extended period of time. For people with complex bodies, using their eyes to control a computer can be life-changing. This technology, when used with communication software, helps people express themselves and connect with others. This method of accessing a computer can also provide AAC Users with the ability to have environmental controls. They can have access to remotes for their television and streaming services, control of audio books and music, and even control over light switches or other bluetooth equipment in their home.

Open Access Resource Centre provides guidance in helping children with complex bodies or fine motor challenges use AAC in ways that work for them. To determine what the best access method might be for your child, our team of experts can meet with you and your child to collaborate.
The team from Open Access Resource Centre who provide this consultation include an Occupational Therapist, an Assistive Technology Specialist, and Speech-Language Pathologist.
After our consultation, we may leave some equipment or tools with you to practice using. These loans are provided for 10 weeks. The trial is meant to help support a future decision to purchase a communication device and access tools for your child. We encourage you to take videos of your child engaging with the equipment. When we find the right fit, an application will be provided to your child’s Speech-language Pathologist so we can help you find funding for, purchase, and set up the system for your child.
