Education and Training

Working with those who impact the lives of individuals with impaired speech, the Open Access Resource Centre (OARC) offers consultation and training on the selection and use of various devices which feature text, symbols or pictures, along with synthesized or recorded voice, to overcome communication barriers.

CONFERENCES

The Open Access Resource Centre (OARC) presents an international conference on a regular basis. At this event, OARC sponsors various speakers to share their expertise and ideas with those attending to help strengthen or expand the use of speech generating devices in an individuals life.

This year OARC is pleased to present
Dr. Carol Goossens on
Friday, March 16, 2012 at the
Viscount Gort Hotel,
1670 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB.

TRAINING

MATCHING EQUIPMENT TO COMMUNICATION NEEDS.
The success of any device as a communications' solution depends very much on joint participation by many of those who interact with an individual. In most cases, the Open Access Resource Centre (OARC) shares its technical knowledge of communications devices with a treatment team that is already in place. OARC does not assess an individual's disabilities, but rather helps service providers decide whether a communications device would be helpful to the individual. The Centre also offers advice on which device(s) might suit the situation.

OARC EQUIPMENT.
When individuals borrow a communications device from the Centre, staff provide in-depth training to them and their treatment teams. This training focusses on the operation of the equipment and on how to customize it over time to meet changing communications' needs.

FEE FOR SERVICE

Currently, OARC is only funded to provide short-term library services. Therefore we will now be charging a fee for any support or training on programming and implementing long-term communication systems. This includes the management of iTouchs, iPads and Apps on devices not borrowed from our Equipment Loan Program. Our current procurement fee covers only the purchasing and initial set-up of a communication system, not any additional training required to manage and program various devices

General Training Session covering most popular Apps:
Half-day Session (Family Members) $25.00/person
Half-day Session (Professionals) $30.00/person

Specialized Training Session pertaining to a specific Individual:
For a Team of up to 5 People $100.00/hour
